How To... Directing Domain Names
Point your domain to your Pepperio site
There is very little dns management required to assign your domain name to your Pepperio site. This is process is made even easier if we are made aware of the url of the site when we set the site up. If not, our IIS server will have no record of the domain intended to direct towards the site, and no-one will become aware of this until the site is launched (unsuccessfully)
Step 1. Fill in the site address on PSA from.
Step 2. Point your CNAME record to youraccountname.pepperio.net
Your DNS (Domain Name Services) is the means of having your url point to your website, and yiur email point to the right mail server. To make sure your web site is found when the user types in your url, some settings need to be changed...
Pepperio is a hosted solution for your website therefore the website
you create in Pepperio needs to be tied to your domain name (web
address). This is achieved using a set of naming protocols called
Domain Name Services (or DNS), which translate domain names (like
yourdomain.com) into IP Addresses (the real address for a server that
hosts a website, eg. 192.168.1.24).
Therefore you need to
“point” your domain name to our Pepperio Servers. This is done by
creating/editing what is know as the 'CNAME' Record in the DNS entry
for your domain name.
Normally the service provider (eg. An ISP like BT) who “hosts” your domain name will control DNS entries for your domain. Many service providers nowadays provide you with direct access to edit DNS entries.
If your live site url is 'www.yoursite.com' and your Pepperio site name is 'yoursite', then your preview url is 'preview-yoursite.pepperio.net and the live server address is 'yoursite.pepperio.net'.
So, in the DNS zone file for 'yoursite' you, or the domain name service provider, need to edit/create the CNAME record as follows:
| Host name | Record Type | CNAME Value |
| www. | CNAME | yoursite.pepperio.net |
Important Note 1: If there is an existing site there will be a CNAME record or an 'A' record in existence for 'www' - this should be deleted.
Important Note 2: Once you make this amendment you will experience a temporary loss (24-72 hours usually) to any old site you have hosted on your domain whilst this change to your new Pepperio hosted site is communicated across the internet.
We recommend your new Pepperio site is published and ready to go live before making changes to your DNS record.
